Checkers is one of the oldest and cleanest two-player board games in existence, offering a calm, tactical counterweight to fast-twitch obstacle courses. Played on an eight-by-eight checkered grid, each match is a battle of spatial control, piece sacrifices, and forward planning where every single movement leaves you either securing the board or exposing your backline.

On Cat Mario, where most games test your reflexes and patience against sudden traps, Checkers shifts the challenge entirely to deliberate strategy. There are no surprise spikes or falling blocks here—only complete visibility of your opponent's pieces, clear movement boundaries, and the quiet satisfaction of orchestrating a multi-jump capture that clears the board.

How to play

Each player begins with twelve pieces placed on the dark squares of the three rows closest to them. Pieces move diagonally forward one square at a time into an unoccupied dark space. When an opposing piece sits adjacent to yours with an empty square directly behind it, you jump over that piece to capture it and remove it from the board.

Reaching the furthest row on your opponent's side crowns your piece into a King. Unlike regular pieces, Kings can move and jump both diagonally forward and backward across the board. The match ends when one player captures all opposing pieces or blocks them so they have no legal moves remaining.

Key tactics and tips

Winning consistently requires thinking two or three turns ahead rather than grabbing the first available jump:

  • Protect your back row: Keep your starting pieces on the home rank as long as possible. As long as those squares are occupied, your opponent cannot promote any pieces into Kings.
  • Dominate the center: Pieces on the edges can only move in one direction and have limited offensive value. Central pieces command the board and create multiple jump angles.
  • Set up multi-jump traps: Intentionally offering a single piece as bait can force your opponent into a jump that lands them directly in line for a double or triple capture on your next turn.
  • Form compact diagonal chains: Keeping your pieces grouped in supporting diagonals ensures that any piece your opponent attempts to jump is backed up and immediately recaptured.

Questions about Checkers

Is Checkers unblocked at school?

Checkers runs in an ordinary browser tab from catmario.org, with nothing to download or install, so it plays on most school Chromebooks and work computers. If a network filter blocks the site, only that network's administrator can change it.

How do you crown a King in Checkers?

When any of your regular pieces reaches the farthest opposite row on the board, it is promoted to a King, allowing it to move and jump diagonally both forward and backward.

Can you capture multiple pieces in a single turn?

Yes. If a piece lands on an empty square after a jump and immediately has another opponent piece to leap over with an empty space behind it, you can execute a multi-jump sequence.

Does Checkers require an account or download?

No. Checkers runs directly in any modern desktop or mobile web browser with no download, sign-up, or installation needed.
