Cat Mario makes its levels hard with traps that appear without warning. Bloxorz is hard in an honest way: everything is visible from the first second, and the only question is whether you can find the order of moves that works. It is a 3D puzzle game from 2007 by Damien Clarke, and it has stayed popular because each stage adds one clear idea.
What you control
You move a single block shaped like two cubes stacked together. The arrow keys tip it over, so it moves one square when it falls from standing to lying, and two squares when it rolls from lying back to standing. Lying sideways it can also roll along its long side and move one square at a time. Working out which state the block will be in on a given tile is most of the challenge. A stage is complete when the block drops upright into the square hole.
How the stages get harder
The first stages are plain grids that teach the rolling rhythm. After that, new parts arrive in turn:
- Bridges that appear or disappear when you trigger a switch.
- Soft round switches that respond to any contact, and heavy X-shaped switches that need the block to stand on them.
- Fragile orange floors that hold a lying block but give way under a standing one.
- Switches that split the block into two cubes. You steer each cube on its own, with Space to swap, until they rejoin.
There are 33 stages in total, and the later ones combine all of these.
Stuck on a stage?
- Count parity. Because the block alternates between standing and lying, some tiles can only be reached in one state. If you keep arriving at the hole lying flat, approach it from one square further away.
- Test a switch before relying on it. Some switches toggle, so pressing one twice can close a bridge you need.
- Use splits to reach places a full block cannot fit. Cubes can cross single-tile paths that a lying block would fall from.
Saving your place
Each stage shows a six-digit passcode. Write it down, or note the stage number, and type it on the title screen next time. This page runs the original Flash version through Ruffle, so it works in current browsers without installing anything.
Questions about Bloxorz
Is Bloxorz unblocked at school?
Bloxorz runs in an ordinary browser tab from catmario.org, with nothing to download or install, so it plays on most school Chromebooks and work computers. If a network filter blocks the site, only that network's administrator can change it.
What keys does Bloxorz use?
The four arrow keys tip the block. Space switches between the two halves after a split switch has divided the block into two cubes.
What happens on orange tiles?
Orange tiles are fragile. The block can lie across them safely, but if it stands upright on one, the tile breaks and you fall.
Can I skip to a later level?
Yes, if you saved its six-digit passcode. Bloxorz shows a code at the start of every stage, and entering it on the title screen loads that stage.
